GeneSight Pharmacogenetic Testing

More information for medication decisions

GeneSight is a pharmacogenetic test that looks at how your genes may affect your response to certain mental health medications. Its report gives your prescribing clinician another piece of information to consider when reviewing your treatment options.

A report for review with your prescribing clinician.

Understanding the report

What the Test Covers

GeneSight reports on gene–drug interactions for medications commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD and other mental health conditions. Results may highlight medications that could require a dose adjustment, be less likely to work or carry a greater risk of side effects based on the genes tested.

The testing process

How It Works

1

Discuss testing

Talk with your prescribing clinician about your medication history and whether GeneSight may be useful.

2

Provide a sample

If ordered, the test uses a cheek swab.

3

Review the report

Your clinician considers the results alongside your symptoms, medical history, other medications and treatment goals.

When to discuss testing

Who May Want to Ask About It

GeneSight may be worth discussing if a mental health medication has not worked as expected or has caused unwanted side effects. Your clinician can help decide whether testing is appropriate for your situation.

Cost and Important Considerations

Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary. Check the current GeneSight cost information before testing.

GeneSight cannot diagnose a condition, identify medication allergies, account for drug–drug interactions or tell you which medication will work best. Do not start, stop or change a prescription based on a test report without speaking with your clinician.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions
